As a program manager or owner of a senior care center, you have many financial and legal considerations to make. It’s important to ensure you are financially protected from claims as a result of an employee incident or resident incident with Assisted Living Facilities Insurance. Equally important, is knowing what makes any particular facility successful and what makes them stand out amongst residents, their families, and potential residents. In late January of this year, senior care resource website published a list of the top rated assisted living facilities for 2014.

The assisted living communities and Alzheimer’s care communities listed in the report earned the highest praise from families, seniors, and eldercare experts on the website. They also met other qualifying criteria, such as having no unresolved negative reviews. Their rating program, called Caring Stars, honors service excellence at assisted living and memory care communities in America based on consumer ratings and reviews in the Senior Care Directory.

The ratings are entirely review-based, but officials from have noted a significant increase in the impact of reviews on leads in the past year, according to the company’s director or social community Denise Graab. Assisted living and memory care community listings with reviews got an average of 14 times more leads compared to listings without reviews in 2013, according to analysis of leads data- nearly triple the rate in 2012.

Andy Cohen, cofounder and CEO of, states that some senior living chains are typically more proactive about seeking reviews for their communities. A couple of these well-known nationwide communities include Brookdale and Sunrise. However there are also non-chain assisted living facilities that ranked well and stood out from the crowd in terms of quality and quantity of consumer reviews. A few of these facilities included Roland Park Place in Baltimore, MD, LiveWell Assisted Living in Chapel Hill, NC, and Pacific Gardens in Santa Clara, CA.

This is the third year has compiled the rankings, with the 405 recognized communities across 38 states representing the top 1% of assisted living and memory care communities nationwide. Communities that qualified to be a Caring Star had to have received at least three reviews during that time frame, at least one of which was a five-star rating. They also had to have an average overall rating of greater than four stars across all reviews on their listing, and as mentioned earlier, no unresolved negative reviews.

Florida, California, and Texas are the states with the most winning communities, which mirrors their size and population, Cohen notes. A few other states that exceeded expectations were North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Ohio. The purpose of the ratings list is to help potential residents and their families make an informed decision when searching for a senior care provider.
