Senior Living Insurance: Summer Heat High Risk for Seniors

Summer is the time of barbecues, pools, picnics and spending time in the sun. However the beautiful sunshine also comes with significant health risks, especially for older adults.

Excessive heat kills more Americans than hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods and earthquakes combined according to the Center for Disease Control.

Summer heat particularly affects senior citizens. The body’s ability to regulate temperature through blood circulation and sweat glands tends to decline with age. Bodies of older adults also contain far less water than a younger person’s. And, older brains don’t recognize thirst as easily, making them more likely to get dehydrated.

Many seniors have certain health problems that can increase their risk of hyperthermia (when the body overheats). This includes congestive heart failure, diabetes, trouble walking around, dementia or even obesity. Medications such as diuretics and other high blood pressure drugs can also cause dehydration or affect the ability of their heart, blood vessels or sweat glands.

When you do go out in the heat, make sure to wear light clothing. Adequate hydration is the most important step to combating heat stress. Drink plenty of water and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Avoid sun bathing or any activities that involve extended periods of sunbathing. If you are out in the sun, make sure to take time to rest in a cool environment. If you can, limit sun exposure during midday hours and schedule summer activities when the sun isn’t at its peak.
