What are the Traits of the Best Nursing Homes of 2014What are the Traits of the Best Nursing Homes of 2014?

Earlier this week, unveiled its “Best of 2015 Awards” highlighting the senior living facilities that are ranked among the top in the country for their performance over the last year. is a website showcasing thousands of families’ reviews of assisted living, memory care communities, retirement communities, and other senior living homes. Their report found that assisted living providers in Atlanta, Chicago, and Dallas represented the top three U.S. cities for senior living care.

So what exactly is it that made the senior living communities at the top of the list stand out from their competitors? The criteria to receive a Best of 2015 award included:

  • The assisted living provider must have received an average overall rating of at least 4.5 stars
  • They must have accumulated a minimum number of reviews
  • And they must offer assisted living, in-home care, independent living, skilled nursing, or Alzheimer’s care.

What may be more important for nursing home administrators to look at than just the criteria, however, is what exactly these positive reviews are saying about the winners. For one nursing home, Emeritus in Atlanta, GA, most of the positive reviews state how kind and accommodating staff members are. Family members of residents also cited tranquility and quiet as being big bonuses of the facility their elderly loved ones are in.

At another community that received numerous positive reviews in Chicago, IL, family members noted the importance of feeling welcome in the facility before even making a decision to move there. One woman found comfort in the fact that her Grandmother was offered lunch while visiting, and even allowed for a respite stay so that she was able to try the facility to feel comfortable before moving in.

These are just a couple examples of what traits are shared by the best nursing homes of 2014.
